Much damage has been caused in Haiti by hurricanes and areas have been entirely inundated by floods. The government has broadcast pleas to churches to open their doors to victims of the storm, but the churches have been hit just as hard and will be hard-pressed to take in refugees.

Storms this season have dumped millions of gallons of rain on Haiti, triggering widespread flooding in the mostly deforested region.

This is catastrophic for residents. The fragile infrastructure has been further damaged, and crops and livestock have been lost to the floodwaters.

Appeals for emergency medicine and food for victims in response to devastating flooding and landslides that have destroyed countless towns and villages.

Relief workers are struggling to distribute supplies to hungry residents, some who have not eaten since their homes were destroyed.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas, with a per capita income of about $1,400 annually and a life expectancy of 53. The country has also experienced widespread political unrest this year.

The funds will provide non-perishable food, medication such as kitchen utensils, sleeping bags and many more essentials.

There's such desparation, since there is more suffering than there are supplies.

The Knights of Columbus from New Market, MN of St. Nicolas Parish have coordinated efforts in getting a system for clean drinking water.
